Over a year ago Want Magazine interviewed Jakob Nielsen about his thoughts on experience design and usability, where it has came from and where it is heading. The interview begins with Nielsen explaining the usability industry pre web and his experiences since 1983. Since then Nielsen says the industry has seen immense growth though he admits that many of the interactions and interfaces on the web today are still being designed by programmers and HTML competent individuals. Nielsen stresses the importance of a great experience on the web as this may be the deciding factor between buying a product or leaving for a competitors website. He cautions that in the traditional world first you buy a product followed by the experience but in the online world the experience is to the fore and then after all of these user interface steps the money is paid. There is an article about the conversation on the Want website you can find here.
